How to increase dopamine levels?

10.05.2023/by Rezida Galimova

Dopamine deficiency is the core of the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease. All antiparkinsonian drugs, directly or indirectly, increase dopamine levels in the brain. Levodopa is a direct precursor of dopamine, so treatment with levodopa drugs is essentially replacement therapy. Dopamine receptor agonists stimulate dopamine receptors, also increasing its release in the synapse. MAO inhibitors (rasagiline) and COMT inhibitors (entacapone) reduce the dopamine-degrading action of enzymes, also increasing its content in the brain. Amantadines slow down the reuptake of dopamine, again increasing its presence where needed in Parkinson’s disease.
