Dopamine deficiency is the core of the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease. All antiparkinsonian drugs, directly or indirectly, increase dopamine levels in the brain. Levodopa is a direct precursor of dopamine, so treatment with levodopa drugs is essentially replacement therapy.
