MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) neurosurgery is an innovative technology that allows for the treatment of nervous system disorders without incisions. The therapeutic effect of MRgFUS is achieved by targeting a millimeter-sized area of the brain with focused ultrasound waves. This area is visible to the doctor on MRI and can be controlled “aim ” with an accuracy of 0.1 mm
First, the doctor conducts a test exposure when the ultrasound “puts to sleep ” neurons for two to three minutes. This allows “palpate ” brain and find the area causing the symptoms. Once the doctor identifies the area responsible for the symptoms, they check for any side effects and, ensuring safety, permanently deactivate the affected area.
Watch the video above to see a schematic representation of MRI-guided focused ultrasound treatment.
To reach the deep structures of the brain with ultrasound, incisions are not needed. “The microscopic scalpel appears right inside exactly where it was needed “
The accuracy of targeting under MRI guidance is fractions of a millimeter, but that’s not all! The doctor first checks with a special test whether it is really necessary to affect this area or not.
Millimeter precision, no incisions, and no need to insert electrodes into the brain ensure a high level of safety.
In our experience, only 5 out of 276 patients needed to stay overnight in the hospital, while the remaining 271 returned home without the need for hospitalization.
Thanks to rapid recovery, effectiveness, and safety, ultrasound treatment has allowed our patients to significantly improve their lives.

Experience is one of the foundations of effectiveness and safety. When we opened in 2020, there were only about 30 MRgFUS centers in the world. Our experience is one of the longest! We have now operated on more than 270 patients from 29 countries, and some already have five-year results.
We continue to monitor each patient for at least a year and strive to maintain contact with them beyond that. We have created a community of patients with movement disorders and aim to educate them on everyday issues related to the disease. Long-term outcomes and the future of our patients are important to us. If symptoms return within a year after the first surgery on the same side, we consider the possibility of a repeat free surgery. We aim to repeat it if the expected benefit-to-risk ratio is reasonable.
We analyze the results of our operations. You can find this analysis in our monograph. We read a lot of global literature on the subject and draw conclusions. Each case gives us the opportunity to improve.
We follow an open approach and allow relatives and loved ones to hold the patient’s hand during the procedure. Our treatment results have been analyzed and openly published.
We are transforming medicine and making it the kind we would want to be treated with ourselves. We think about the distant future of humanity and follow a specific system of values
Don’t forget that equipment can be bought, a building can be constructed, consumables can be purchased, but without skilled, honest, and intelligent people, it all makes no sense.

The accuracy of treatment is ensured in two ways:
Rezida Galimova since childhood dreamed of treating patients without pain and incisions. The desire to transform medicine led her during one of her internships to this latest treatment technology, which she and her team were the first to implement in Russia.
Rezida Maratovna personally communicates with the patient before their arrival for treatment and monitors for a year after surgery, many patients continue to stay in touch, and knowing her patients provides a basis for mastering her skills. She is a co-author of the first book on MRgFUS. Rezida Galimova openly shows the results of her surgeries (with the patient’s written consent), one of her inventions is the open operating room, where patients can be held by loved ones. Rezida Maratovna’s doctoral dissertation is dedicated to the treatment of tremor, Parkinson’s disease, dystonias and other diseases with focused ultrasound. You can read about the results of her MRgFUS surgeries in research journals
The accuracy of treatment is ensured in two ways:
The founders of the center, Rezida Galimova, Igor Buzaev, and Ildar Khalfin, value their native Republic and decided to open the center in Ufa to pay tribute to the teachers and people who helped them grow. We strive to maintain the medicine of the Republic of Bashkortostan at a world-class level and are now nurturing a young generation of talented innovative leaders in medicine by establishing Vyacheslav Buzaev Fellowships for young doctors at our medical center
We do not insist on surgery, do not “sell ” and do not impose. Each type of treatment has its indications and contraindications. Before recommending surgical treatment, we conduct a consultation and assess whether the possibilities of drug therapy have been exhausted. If we expect improvement from changes in medication regimen, we first observe the reaction to optimal drug therapy.

It depends on the disease. Ultrasound alleviates symptoms but does not always address the cause of the disease. However, remember that if you keep the disease under control, alleviate symptoms, and slow its progression, it is quite possible that a radical treatment for your condition will soon be found. Remember, 20 years ago, no one could control HIV infection, and now cases of HIV cure are known, chronic hepatitis C has recently become treatable, the cause of stomach ulcers has been identified, and the number of surgeries and complications has decreased, medicine is advancing, you just need to hold on until its next breakthrough. Here you can read about strategies and tactics in the fight against chronic disease
