MRgFUS vs Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
- RF thalamotomy remains an important therapeutic option from economic point of view.
- MRgFUS is a no-incisions-treatment. RFA must be done by drilling the skull and a temporary insertion electrode.
- MRgFUS is no-incisions-treatment, but RFA as any surgery with incisions could complicate with haemorrage.
- MRgFUS and RFA both does not need general anaesthesia, and the patient is conscious, during the RFA surgery a patient performs tests with an inserted electrode.
- MRgFUS targeting is reversible and does not lead the tissues damage, but reposition of RFA electrode is mechanical damage.
- Bilateral MRgFUS is feasible, but staged asymmetric bilateral stereotactic RF lesioning can be a safe and effective method in highly selected patients in good hands, in the past, bilateral RFA led to speech disorders which delayed development of RFA method.
