What makes the Buzaev Clinic unique? The attending neurologist can accompany their patient for non-invasive focused ultrasound treatment and even be present during the procedure!
Our patient is a native of the sunny country of Tajikistan, works as a foreman on a collective farm with hundreds of heads of cattle, has a 2-hectare fishing pond, and is raising four children.
And quite unexpectedly, at the age of 50, his right hand, and then his leg, stop obeying him, starting to tremble involuntarily – over time, the tremor in the hand and leg does not subside, but rather intensifies. Gradually, slowness of movement sets in.
Just yesterday, a stable and quite happy life with a clear and predictable future suddenly became dangerous and unpredictable. Worry about his health and family well-being only worsened the overall condition. At such a young, active age, the sudden development of the disease was a real shock for him and his loved ones.
In 2022, our patient visited the Lukmoni-Khakim Clinic in Khujand, where Tajik doctors, together with specialists from the Buzaev Clinic, diagnosed “Parkinson’s Disease” and prescribed treatment.
After starting medication for tremor, he experienced a significant improvement in his condition. Control over the tremor was maintained for two years, but by 2024, the shaking in his hand no longer decreased after taking the medication.
Doctors decided to change the treatment strategy and offered surgery using the modern MRgFUS method.
Learning more about the new non-invasive treatment method using MRI-guided focused ultrasound, our patient decided to come to Russia for treatment.
After several joint online consultations with a Parkinson’s specialist and a neurosurgeon from the Buzaev clinic, doctors from Tajikistan prepared the patient for treatment, and on April 24, 2024, the patient flew to the V.S. Buzaev International Medical Centre ®️.
The entire treatment took about three hours. The patient’s head was shaved smoothly (to allow better passage of ultrasound waves to the brain), a stereotactic frame was placed and securely fixed on the head, and now he is following the neurologist’s instructions on the MRI table: quickly bringing fingers of the outstretched arms together and apart, holding palms straight in front with fingers spread… After this, the neurosurgeon performs targeted ultrasound beam exposure on the thalamic nucleus of the brain, and the stiffness and tremor check is repeated again.
And the right spot is found! In the presence of a loved one and the attending physician, right on the operating table, the hand and leg became obedient again, as if by the wave of a magic wand, stiffness and tremor disappeared.
Neurologist Abdurakhmon Erkinovich, the attending physician of our patient, was very impressed with the result. He is very pleased with the outcome and is confident that patients in his clinic, for whom medications for tremor and stiffness have stopped working, will now be able to return to normal life.
Despite the fact that treatment with focused ultrasound is well tolerated by patients and does not require staying in the intensive care unit (usually they go home by the evening of the next day), they all have access to a rehabilitation program on the Semitsvetik online community platform, where they can communicate with other people with Parkinson’s disease, receive advice from a Parkinsonologist, and regularly participate in a motor rehabilitation program with other Community members.
